Mediation is a way for parties to take charge of their divorce process. It is for people who think that they can craft a better solution to their problems than a judge who has a couple of hours (or less) to learn about their situation.

Susan's role is to facilitate negotiations between the parties in a series of face to face meetings. The parties' lawyers are generally not present, but are used as consultants on an as needed basis.

As a mediator, Susan Lillis does not represent either party as an attorney nor does she give them legal advice. Instead, Susan acts as a neutral facilitator in a series of negotiation sessions between the parties. She provides her clients with a list of the things that they will need to resolve as part of their divorce. She coordinates the exchange of financial information that will be needed to settle a divorce. She prepares any agreements that are eventually reached so that the agreement can be submitted to the court. Susan also prepares the other paperwork necessary to file a joint petition for divorce.

Mediation is recommended to people who believe that despite their differences their spouse will honestly disclose all relevant financial information. It is also recommended to people who are trying to reduce the conflict in their divorce in the interests of their relationships with their children.

It is recommended to people who feel that they can sit down at a table with their spouse and articulate their needs and desires without being intimidated by their spouse.

Parties are encouraged to have their own attorneys, although the attorneys usually do not attend the mediation sessions.

Mediation is often the most cost effective of the three methods of obtaining a divorce.
